type='text'>Battle in the Marsh</title><summary type='text'>I noticed bloody muskrat footprints in the snow while walking the dogs this morning. We have several muskrat lodges in our marsh but we also have mink, which love to kill muskrat. This is a photo of a female common yellowthroat that was was flitting in and out of the dogwoods looking for something good to eat. They will soon be gone from Ohio, heading south for the winter. I've spent a fair amount of time trying to photograph these little cuties in the spring but have never gotten the photo I was hoping for. I've seen a few Killdeers taking flight from the middle of the marsh but this morning I saw two Greater Yellowlegs working the shallow areas for food.

When the temperatures started to drop we saw a huge increase in the number of american goldfinches at the thistle and black oil sunflower seed feeders. It was very large and it's back was black so we think it is a Great Black-backed Gull. If anyone knows otherwise please let me know. According to the area bird list it can occur in this area in the summer and winter but it is considered a rare sighting...some years it isn't seen here at all. I wasn't too happy with the results so I'm going to try again later this afternoon, weather permitting. From what I have read it takes her around two days to build the nest, so my window of opportunity is waning. This past week the babies appeared and this is a photo of one of them. I throw some corn out for the Canada geese family and the muskrats and wild Mallards get what's left. At first I was excited, then it disappeared under the chicken coop...think I slept two hours that night.
